How to Clean a Designer Drain

A Designer Drain can add a touch of elegance to your bathroom or balcony, but just like any other part of your home, it requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. A clean drain not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your space but also ensures proper drainage and prevents unpleasant odours. In this blog post, we'll take you through our easy, step-by-step guide to cleaning your tile-insert drain, ensuring it remains both functional and stylish.

Step 1: Remove the Cover Plate/Tile Insert with Our Removing Tool

The first step in cleaning your Designer Drain is to remove the cover plate or tile insert. This is where our specialised removing tool comes in handy. If your drain features a tile insert, you’ll want to be gentle to avoid damaging the tile itself. Slip the tool underneath the edge of the cover plate and pry it upwards. Make sure to do this carefully to avoid scratching the surrounding tile or finish.

Step 2: Clear Out Gunk from the Grate Underneath

Once you’ve successfully removed the cover plate, it's time to tackle the accumulation of hair and gunk that often builds up in the grate underneath. Use a pair of gloves to protect your hands, and simply scoop out any soap or debris that may have settled there. A small brush or even an old toothbrush can be useful for getting into those hard-to-reach areas.

Step 3: Use Soap and a Soft Bristle Brush to Clean the Drain

With the bulk of the gunk removed, it’s time to give your drain a thorough clean. Grab a mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush. Dip the brush in soapy water and scrub the grate and surrounding areas. This step not only helps to remove any remaining dirt and grime but also aids in eliminating potential odours.

Step 4: Rinse with Warm Water

After scrubbing, it’s essential to rinse away the soap and any loose debris. Use warm water to help dissolve any stubborn residue. Pour the warm water over the grate and surrounding area, ensuring that all soap is washed away.

Step 5: Put Cover Plate/Tile Insert Back On

Once everything is clean and dry, it's time to reattach the cover plate or tile insert. Align it carefully to ensure a snug fit. Gently press it back down until it is securely in place. If using a tile insert, ensure that it sits flush with the surrounding tiles for that sleek, seamless look.

Cleaning a Designer Drain may seem like a pain, but with these simple steps, you can easily maintain its elegance and ensure it functions properly. Regular maintenance will not only contribute to the longevity of your drain but also keep your space looking pristine. Remember to clean your drain every few months, or whenever you notice a buildup, to help prevent it from clogging up to the point that you’ll need to call a plumber.
